Chef Ana is a master at f flavour balance and wickedly creative combinations. Using classic dishes but making them her own along with local ingredients makes for a winning treat. Cocktails are great to pair with as is a small but creative wine list. Room is stark but works. Service is friendly and very informative. A must
Absolutely delightful dinner that was gifted to me by my son for my birthday as a surprise. And the dinner itself was a succession of surprises! I love surprises, love the unusual small plates (5 dishes + the delicious broth to open one's appetite and the spicy cantelope to clean the mouth before dessert) showcasing truly traditional Mexican cuisine and using freshest ingredients. Each plate was delicious with subtle intriguing flavours and gorgeous presentation, so I cannot select a favorite! I just loved the shrimp broth, the crunchy flavourful tuna tostada, the crab with summer chiles, and the cochon de lait with cherries. I would love to take classes from this amazing chef!
Also the staff was extremely attentive, I love the pink hallway, the bathrooms with no assigned gender and hip music playing.
This place tries (and fails) to be an avant-garde Mexican tasting experience. The result is a series of very small, expensive, and woefully bland snacks. The one exception is the rice bowl, which was excellent. I look forward to the rebrand because the current situation isn’t worth anyone’s time or money
We had delicious dinner here. It was a five course prix fixe and was a fantastic meal. Pretty much "masa forward" (no surprise there). Shrimp broth was spicy with a kick and served in a cute earthenware cup. The final savory course was some roasted pork neck with an adjacent thick masa tortilla (sope?) with a fruity sauce on top with perfect level of spice. Complex and balanced. Squeeze of lime, bite of each together. Sublime! Also, get the spiced coffee served with a little masa "muffin". Fantastic!
Hidden gem, fancy Mexican restaurant with 5 courses tasting. They ask if you have any food allergies or special diet before they personalize a menu for you. Food was definitely delicious and very traditional but I wished they served at least 7 courses, favorite ones; Caldito Shrimp Lime Juice, Epazote Tamal Tomato Bottarga, Porcelet Carnitas Rainier Cherries Memela & Chocoflan Coffee Caramel Cacao Nib. Bartender had some awesome ideas for non alcoholic “mocktails”, my favorite was “Watermelon Tepache”. Great atmosphere and bartender was very knowledgeable.
If you really enjoy Mexican food, want to try authentic recipes, and appreciate fine dining tasting menus then take advantage of this place BEFORE IT CLOSES AT END OF 2023 and morphs into a new concept. Menu of the day is basically a surprise however can be prepared a little around your general preferences. Don’t come here if you get annoyed at small portions; admittedly was still a little hungry afterwards. Only handful of tables. Eat at the small bar top and watch the talented cooking. Exterior not well marked, little bit of a dive, hole in wall vibe but neat.
This restaurant only does a "blind" (you don't know what is going to be served until it arrives at the table) 5 course "tasting" (small portions) menu as it's only option.
Sometimes, that can be a problem. We were not expecting octopus! I'm sure it was well prepared but it was not what we were expecting. I will eat almost anything once, but I had a tough (pun intended) time with the octopus. My wife could not eat her portion. It was not to our taste. Blind Menu! At $80 per person I would like to be able to finish my meal. This did not include our bar bill.
There were several small portions that were very good. The "hit" of the night was a house made cornmeal cup filled with a crab, cream, Cilantro mixture. The deep corn flavor against the other ingredients was a winner. Too bad I can't just order several of those.
We enjoyed the concept and the fact that the Chef helped serve some of the courses during the meal.
Very enjoyable experience. The flavors were not what you would probably associate with a Mexican restaurant (as is likely the point). The food and drinks were very thoughtfully prepared. Though not every item was to our group’s individual liking, the dinner was quite memorable. Glad Lengua Madre is in town.
